Dale 'Klutzy the Clown' Rancourt

For more than a decade, it would have been difficult to find a Cape Bretoner who hadn't heard of Dale Rancourt’s alter ego, Klutzy the Clown.

Rancourt entertained both children and adults, bouncing from birthday parties to nursing homes to public events. Although he was not an especially good performer, he still managed to carve out a niche for Klutzy in Cape Breton's entertainment economy, but it's all gone now.

Dale 'Klutzy the Clown' Rancourt violated some of the most fundamental rules society imposes on those entrusted with the care of children.

In this multi-part series, I’ll be delving into the disturbing tale of the disgraced Dale 'Klutzy the Clown' Rancourt.

Dale ‘Klutzy the Clown’ Rancourt - Part 1

Dale ‘Klutzy the Clown’ Rancourt - Part 2

In this episode of Nighttime we will be joined by Michael Fraiman and Adrian Lee and our topic is the disturbing story of Dale ' Klutzy ' Rancourt... and their documentary that really didn't age well.

Dale ‘Klutzy the Clown’ Rancourt - Part 3

In this episode his victim , who we will refer to as Jane Doe, will tell their story publicly for the first time. A different and much darker story than the one he admitted to in his guilty plea.

three more Chilling Tales from Haunted Nova Scotia (with Steve Vernon)

Nothing brings life to the Halloween spirit like a good ghost story, and no one tells a ghost story like Steve Vernon.

Longtime listeners will know Steve well. He's a favorite author of mine and has joined us several times in the past to share his unique style of storytelling.

Just a few nights back, Steve and I ventured into one of Halifax's many forests for a night of storytelling.

I brought my microphone, and Steve brought a flashlight and a book of his stories.

In this episode I'll take you along with me for three chilling tales from haunted Nova Scotia written and read by Steve Vernon.

the Death of Andrew Gnazdowsky (and the quest for answers and accountability)

Then 26 year old civil engineer Andrew Gnazdowsky and a co-worker were on site completing a survey of a Nova Scotia Power dam near Sheet Harbour in October of 2020.

When a technology failure disrupted their work, Andrew made the fateful decision to enter the water and collect the failed equipment.

Moments later, Andrew would briefly yell for help before ultimately disappearing below the still water.

In the year since Andrew's tragic death, the Gnazdowsky's have been steadfast in their belief that the investigation into Andrew's death has been at best flawed and at worst completely compromised… and it's not just a hunch that tells them that.

Conflicts of interest, erroneous death records, the scrubbing online records, bureaucratic flip flopping, and opportunistic politicians...

This story has all of it.

Part 1

In this episode Nicole Gnazdowsky describes the search for answers and accountability related to the death of her brother Andrew Gnazdowsky.

Where is Dylan Ehler? (missing from Truro, Nova Scotia Since May 6, 2020)

On May 6, 2020, three-year-old Dylan Ehler vanished while playing in his grandmother’s backyard in Truro, Nova Scotia

His grandmother claims she had briefly turned away to leash a dog, and in that fleeting moment, Dylan disappeared.

A massive search followed, but the only trace ever found were his two rubber boots—discovered caught in debris in a shallow brook not far from the property.

With little progress in finding Dylan, the case has taken on a life of its own online. Fueled by speculation and emotion, it has become a magnet for conspiracy theories, unrelenting armchair detectives, disturbing ransom hoaxes, and a cyberbullying case that ended up before the courts.

In this series, we explore all of it—from the facts of Dylan’s disappearance to the chaos that followed.

In part one we are joined by Dylan's father Jason Ehler to discuss his missing son Dylan Ehler.

In Part two our guest is the last person to see Dylan prior to his disappearance, his grandmother Dorothy Parsons who shares her memories of Dylan’s last known day.

Kimberley Lake's Vision Loss and Visions (Charles Bonnet Syndrome)

Listen on the Premium feed

Up until the last several years, Kimberley Lake lived a pretty typical life; a married mom, holding down a stable office job... but for reasons not fully known her life changed dramatically when almost in an instant she lost her vision almost fully.

As you will hear Kim describe in this episode, her vision loss obviously created a tremendous amount of change in her life, but it also had a very odd side affect.

Kimberley has repeatedly experienced the affects of Charles Bonnet Syndrome.

If you are unfamiliar with CBS, like I was until last week, Charles Bonnet Syndrome is a condition in which people who recently lost their version experience vivid, and often intense visual hallucinations.

In many cases, the hallucinations are patterns or objects appearing unexpectedly, however the hallucinations can also be horrific. Kim has seen Rats, spiders, Donald Trump, and even a corpse in her bed.

Tonight, in this episode, Our guest Kimberly lake will share the story of her vision loss, and her visions.

Gordie Sampson - Cape Breton's Hit Maker

For as far back as history can tell, inhabitants of Cape Breton Island have found sustenance in our fisheries, our forests, our coal, Steel, and of course tourism.

These industries have brought people to Cape Breton from around the world or sent a little bit of Cape Breton to them.

But, if we were considering the island’s greatest exports, well that may come as a bit of a surprise. An unassuming Cape Bretoner, with a smile much bigger than his ego, is responsible for some of the world's biggest songs by some of the world's biggest artists.

It's fair to say that Gordie Sampson was able to send a taste of Cape Breton Island to more people than our natural industries ever could and he has the Grammys to show for it.

After achieving success in Canada as a solo performer, Gordie found his place in writing for others.

As it all turned out, his ability to connect clever lyrics with traditional Celtic inspired melody has made him a go to for country music's biggest stars.

To name just a few, Gordie’s songs were recorded by: WIllie Nelson, Faith Hill, Keith Urban, Trisha Yearwood, Luke Bryan, Martina MacBride, Lady Antebellum, Brad Paisley, Lee Ann Rymes, Miley Cyrus, Bon Jovi, and perhaps his biggest... the Grammy award winning song by Carrie Underwood 'Jesus Take the Wheel".

So needless to say, Gordie has unique insight into the music business and a hell of a lot of stories.

In this episode of Nighttime, I'm proud to be joined by Cape Breton's hit maker Gordie Sampson.

the Life, Death, and Legacy of Rehtaeh Parson

This story is hard to listen to, but equally so, it's important.

We are going to be joined by someone who's personal tragedy has positioned them to become an internationally known activist and advocate against sexualized violence and cyber bullying.

Her name is Leah Parsons and what she and her family have been through over the last 7 years... simply put... is horrific.

The story starts with the rape of Leah's then 15 year old daughter by a group of young men and continues with a 17 month quest for justice, and odyssey to stop photos of the rape from circulating around Rehteah's school.

Obviously, what will be discussing isn't for the faint of heart, but as horrible as it is, you will hear some positives.

The crimes against Leah's daughter highlighted significant problems with many of the institutions parents rely to keep their children safe and eventually, this story would the catalyst for change. To prevent something like this from happening again new cyber bullying laws were introduced and sweeping changes were implemented in schools, police departments, and within our mental health services.

It's just a shame that Leah's daughter Rehteah had to pay for those changes with her life.

In this episode of Nighttime, we are joined by Leah Parsons and our topic is the life, the death, and the legacy of Rehteah Parsons.

Donna and Victor's Very Big and Very Ugly Disagreement (Live on Youtube with the 911 calls podcast’s Operator)

In this episode of Nighttime Live, I will be joined by the Operator (host of 911 Calls Podcast) to discuss my favorite 3 minutes of audio… EVER.

The origin of the audio is a bit of a mystery, but it seems to include two employees of a major Canadian telecommunications company having a very big and very ugly disagreement during an otherwise routine inter company telephone interation.

Donna (who is speaking from a call center in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia) looses her patience with Victor (speaking from a kiosk in a Brampton, Ontario mall) when he seems to be in breach of some sort of task related requirement. The result, is a melt down for the ages.

the Story of Chickie MacPhee - Cape Breton's WILD THING

For a period of time in the late 1980s, Cape Breton’s Chickie Macphee became one of his island’s most famous and most beloved residents. His notoriety didn’t begin with any great feat, show of skill, or significant act of generosity. Chickie Macphee was just a regular Cape Bretoner with a bit of a drinking problem and a love for Karaoke.

Part 1

In this episode Chickie Macphee's brother Rich MacPhee will tell us how Chickie ended up famous for getting drunk and singing ‘Wild Thing’ on the community TV channel.

Part 2

In this episode, we will explore Chickie’s unique legacy by speaking with his close friend Dorothy.

The Story of 'the Coffee Cowboy' Robert Chetwynd

In this episode, we are going to come face to face with one of most prosecuted people in Nova Scotia's storied history.

Our guest is a criminal so hardened that when I asked him for an estimate on the length of his rap sheet, he simply drew a blank and giggled. But, that's probably for the better as listing the charges this man has faced would be about as interesting, and as exhausting, as reading through the Canadian Criminal Code.

But, as you will soon learn, there is much more to it.

when the layers of legalese are peeled back this isn't the story of a career criminal. It's the story of a man who simply wanted to hang around at tim horton's parking lot drinking coffee with his friends.

The problems started when he lost his license and bought of horse as a way to get around town. If this man on horseback was a can of gasoline... the match that ignited it would be his dispute with the management of his small town Tim Horton.

After several instances of his horse answering the call of nature on their property.... He was told that he, nor his chestnut quarter horse were no longer welcome on their property... a demand he refused to obey. Now, nearly 20 years after the events that made him and his horse international news, He is willing to tell his story.

In this episode of Nighttime, we are going to be joined by ‘The Coffee Cowboy’ Robert Chetwynd.

the Strange World of Ashley MacIsaac

In this episode, we are going to be joined by one of the more colourful characters to ever grace Canada's music charts.

Our guest is as well known for his awe-inspiring talents on the fiddle as he is for the strange stories and controversy scattered throughout his 30 year career.

If you followed Canadian music in the 90s, you know Ashley Macisaac

His 1995 album 'Hi how are you today' went double platinum and in the process helped bring about a sort of renaissance for the fiddle and Celtic music.

This episode however won't be about Ashley Macissac's impact on popular music and it won't be about his various public relations missteps that shocked and appalled many of his more traditional fans.

Ashley MacIsaac is joining me here on Nighttime to speak publicly for the first time about something very personal and very important to him.

UFOs are, and have been, a part of his life since childhood.

So, buckle up and get ready for a bumpy ride through the strange world of Ashley MacIsaac.
