The Missing Men of Smiths Falls, Ontario

In and around the small eastern Ontario town of Smiths Falls, a series of missing men began to fuel widespread rumours, fear, and suspicion about what was happening beneath the surface of the community.

For years, families waited for answers while police searched for evidence and residents traded theories about whether the cases were somehow connected.

Then, just one month after a large reward was offered for information, the investigation took a dramatic turn. There would be arrests, murder charges, and the discovery of human remains on a remote rural property outside town.

But that was only the beginning…

As investigators continued searching the land, more bodies would be found, and attention would turn to the disturbing history of the property itself, raising new questions about how far back this story really goes, and how many secrets may still be buried there.

Where are Lilly and Jack Sullivan - Part 18: Melahya Speaks

Six-year-old Lilly Sullivan and her four-year-old brother Jack Sullivan disappeared from their rural home in Lansdowne Station, Nova Scotia, on May 2, 2025, after their parents reported waking up and finding the children missing.

Despite Nova Scotia’s largest ground search involving police, volunteers, dogs, drones, and helicopters, no trace of the children has been found.

In this episode we hear from the children’s mother, Malehya Brooks-Murray, for the first time in fifteen months. Malehya recently participated in a CBC Interview, and like every aspect of this case, it raises as many questions as it answers.

Parker Wells, Darius MacDougall, and the fight to strengthen Canada's Emergency Alert System

Canada has an emergency alert system capable of reaching millions of people within seconds, but when a vulnerable person goes missing, whether that system can be used often depends on where they disappear.

In this episode of The Canadian Gothic, we are joined by Jennifer Ball, founder of the Project Indigo movement, and Ronald Degagne the advocate behind the Darius’ Law petition, to examine the gaps in Canada’s emergency alert system.

Jennifer discusses how the disappearance of Parker Wells inspired her advocacy, while Ronald explains how the disappearance of six-year-old Darius MacDougall pushed him to call for change.

The Search For Parker Wells Ends (Located Deceased in Calgary, AB on July 29, 2026)

On July 30, 2026, the search for 11-year-old Parker Wells came to a heartbreaking end when his body was discovered in a drainage pipe in northeast Calgary.

Parker, who was autistic, neurodivergent and nonverbal, disappeared from his day home on July 16, prompting one of the largest search efforts in Calgary's recent history. Hundreds of police officers, firefighters, search-and-rescue teams, trained volunteers and members of the public dedicated countless hours to finding him. In the end, new evidence led investigators back to an area near Deerfoot Trail, where Parker was found.

In this episode of Canadian Gothic, we examine the final days of the search, the discovery that brought hope to an end, what investigators have revealed about how Parker was found, and the extraordinary community response that rallied around one little boy and his family.

Where is Parker Wells? (Last Seen in Calgary, AB | July 16, 2026)

On July 16, 2026, 11-year-old Parker Wells disappeared from his day home in Calgary. Parker is autistic, neurodivergent and nonverbal, and operates more like a 2-3 year old.

His disappearance has prompted an enormous search involving police, firefighters, search-and-rescue teams and hundreds of volunteers. Surveillance footage has helped investigators trace some of Parker’s movements, but major questions remain about where he went and how he has remained missing despite such an extensive effort.

In this episode of Canadian Gothic, we will focus on what is currently known, what remains unclear and how the public can help find Parker Wells.

Eli Wood is Missing (Last Seen in Kitchener, Ontario | Oct 18, 2025)

On October 18, 2025, 25-year-old Eli Wood was last seen by his family on a video call that ended just prior to midnight. Something they did daily as a way to stay connected while Eli was attending university in Kitchener. Hours later, firefighters responded to a fire in Eli’s apartment.

But Eli wasn’t there… and hasn’t been seen since.

Police say the fire was arson and that foul play is suspected in Eli’s disappearance, but months later, little more than that has been revealed.

Important questions like what happened that night? why was the fire considered targeted? and where is Eli? all remain unanswered as his family pleads for answers, community searches continue, and police say an investigation remains active.

The Murder of Debbie Ann Hutchinson? (Last Seen April 2017 | Sydney, Nova Scotia)

In April 2017, 59-year-old Debbie Ann Hutchinson vanished from Sydney, Nova Scotia. Days later, her white Kia Magentis was found burning in a wooded area not far from her home.

In this episode, we are joined by Debbie’s estranged daughter, Colette Deveaux to discuss her mother’s unsolved homicide, the complicated grief that followed, and her impossible emotional position: seeking justice for her mother while reckoning with trauma caused by that same relationship.

A Basic Timeline of Deb Ann Hutchinson’s Case

Easter Weekend 2017

Debbie Ann Hutchinson, a 59-year-old retired postal worker from Sydney, Cape Breton, disappeared over the Easter weekend in 2017.

Some early reports say Debbie was last seen on April 14, while later police reporting places her on surveillance video on April 15 at Sydney-area businesses, including a drive-thru.

April 16, 2017

On the morning of April 16, Debbie’s white 2005 Kia Magentis was reportedly seen operating.

Later that morning, around 10:30 a.m., ATV riders found a vehicle burning in a wooded area off Cossitt Heights Drive, not far from Debbie’s home.

At the time, Debbie had not yet been reported missing. The vehicle’s VIN was not visible, there was no matching stolen vehicle report, and the car was extinguished and towed for salvage.

April 24, 2017

Debbie’s family reported her missing after being unable to contact her. Police later confirmed that the burned vehicle found off Cossitt Heights Drive belonged to Debbie.

Around this time, an SPCA notice reportedly appeared on Debbie’s front door saying her dog had been seized. Family members said Debbie rarely went anywhere without her dog, Molly, making this detail especially concerning.

Inside Debbie’s home, family said groceries were left on the floor and Easter baskets were being prepared. To those who knew her, it did not appear that Debbie had planned to leave.

The Initial Search

Police and search crews began looking for Debbie in the days after she was reported missing.

Search efforts included ground search teams, K9 units, human remains detection dogs, wooded searches near Cossitt Heights Drive and Highway 125, and aerial searches by helicopter.

At the time, police described Debbie’s disappearance as suspicious, but said there was no specific evidence of foul play.

The Investigation Continues

Over the years, investigators interviewed more than 60 people, canvassed Debbie’s neighbourhood, reviewed surveillance footage from local businesses, and checked her government, financial, and personal records. Her technology devices were also searched.

Debbie’s family continued to speak publicly about the case, saying from the beginning that something was wrong.

Six Years Later

Six years after Debbie disappeared, new investigators took over the case.

Cape Breton Regional Police later announced they were treating Debbie’s disappearance as a homicide. Police did not publicly say what had changed or what evidence led to that decision.

Vehicles of Interest

Police released information about several vehicles seen near the area where Debbie’s car was found burning.

They sought information about:

  • a black Ford Escape

  • a blue Ford Ranger

  • a green pickup truck

 
 

Reward Offered

Nova Scotia’s Department of Justice added Debbie’s case to the Rewards for Major Unsolved Crimes Program.

A reward of up to $150,000 was offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible for Debbie’s death.

Police and Debbie’s family continue to believe there are people who know something about what happened to her.
